How many times have you spent time perfecting your makeup, only to realize that halfway through the day (or even earlier), it has already faded? Foundations that melt, eyeshadows that crease, blush that disappears… It’s not always the product’s fault. Often, the problem lies in poor skin preparation.
At Foriu, we see this all the time—clients who invest in high-quality cosmetics but skip essential pre-makeup steps.
Today, we’re sharing the most common skin prep mistakes and how to avoid them.
Why Is Skin Preparation So Important?
Think of your skin as a canvas: the better you prepare it, the better your makeup will adhere and look. Skipping proper prep can affect longevity, texture, and even how products oxidize. Poor preparation can also lead to patchiness, dryness, excess shine, or foundation separating.

Mistake 1: Not Cleansing Properly Before Makeup
It may seem basic, but many people apply makeup without properly cleansing their skin. Leftover skincare, sweat, oil, or environmental buildup create a barrier that prevents makeup from adhering properly.
What to do:
-
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type.
-
Pat dry—don’t rub.
-
Cleanse even if you “don’t look dirty.”
Mistake 2: Skipping Regular Exfoliation
Makeup doesn’t sit well on textured skin, dead cells, or clogged pores. This doesn’t mean exfoliating daily—but maintaining a weekly routine helps renew the skin’s surface.
What to do:
-
Exfoliate 1–2 times per week with a gentle product.
-
Dry skin: opt for enzyme-based exfoliants.
-
Oily skin: use a BHA (salicylic acid) once a week.

Mistake 3: Not Moisturizing Properly
Dehydrated skin absorbs makeup—then rejects it. When skin lacks hydration, it may also produce excess oil to compensate, ruining your look.
What to do:
-
Use a moisturizer or gel suited to your skin type.
-
Wait at least 5 minutes before applying foundation.
-
Apply eye cream to improve concealer blending.

Mistake 4: Using the Wrong Sunscreen Under Makeup
Many foundations don’t provide enough SPF. However, applying a sunscreen that’s too thick or greasy can cause makeup to pill or melt.
What to do:
-
Choose lightweight gel or emulsion sunscreens.
-
Let it fully absorb before applying primer or foundation.
-
For outdoor events, consider formulas that double as a makeup-gripping base.
Mistake 5: Mixing Incompatible Products
Sometimes we combine brands and formulas without considering compatibility. For example, a silicone-heavy moisturizer paired with a water-based foundation can cause separation or pilling.
What to do:
-
Use products with compatible bases (water-based with water-based, silicone-based with silicone-based).
-
Test product combinations before important events.
-
When in doubt, keep it simple: moisturizer, primer, and lightweight foundation.
Mistake 6: Skipping Primer
Primer acts as a bridge between skin and makeup. Without it, foundation may slide, crease, or fail to set properly. Using the wrong primer can also worsen the result.
What to do:
-
Oily skin: apply mattifying primer to the T-zone.
-
Dry skin: choose hydrating or illuminating primer.
-
Combination skin: customize by area.
-
For long events: opt for gripping or long-wear primers.
Mistake 7: Applying Foundation Too Quickly
Another common mistake is rushing through steps. Applying foundation over freshly applied skincare can cause makeup to slip and lose adherence.
What to do:
-
Wait 2–5 minutes between each step.
-
Use that time to fill in brows or prep lips.
-
Blend foundation with a damp sponge or brush to avoid excess product.
